Masca Valley
Tenerife, Tenerife
Characterized by rugged cliffs, forested trails, and waterfalls, the wild landscapes of the Masca Valley are among Tenerife’s most beautiful. The remote gorge offers a thrilling backdrop for a hike—the trail winds down through the gorge and finishes at a black-sand beach.
The Basics
When it comes to Masca Valley, the journey is just as impressive as the destination; the dizzying drive climbs up steep mountain roads from Santiago del Teide, and features switchbacks and spectacular views over the valley. Most tours of western Tenerife and Teide National Park include a stop at Masca village and give you free time for a short walk into the valley. Alternatively, you can hike all the way through the valley to the coast.
Things to Know Before You Go
If you plan to hike through the Masca Valley, wear solid hiking shoes and be prepared for the occasional scramble. Bring your swimsuit too, as the trail finishes on the beach.
The trail takes around three hours to hike and is suitable for travelers of a moderate fitness level.
It’s a steep drive through the mountains to Masca village, so less confident drivers or those who suffer from vertigo might be better to take a tour.
There are a number restaurants and accommodation options in Masca Village.
How to Get There
Masca Valley is located on the northwest coast of Tenerife and is reachable via the TF-436 mountain road. Most visitors arrive from Santiago del Teide, a winding 3-mile (5-kilometer) drive which takes around 20 minutes. Public buses run twice daily from Santiago del Teide on weekdays only; alternatively, hire a taxi from town. Hikers tackling the Masca gorge trail can also take a water taxi from Masca Beach at the end of the trail to Los Gigantes.
When to Get There
The small village can get crowded in the peak months of July and August, when traffic can be heavy along the mountain roads and parking is limited in the village. If you’re visiting independently, it’s best to make an early start.
Exploring West Tenerife
After exploring the park’s volcanic landscapes and taking in the views from Mt. Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, continue along the west coast, where you can stop to admire the towering sea cliffs of Los Gigantes, visit the resort town of Costa Adeje, and hit the beaches at Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.
