Matanga Hill

The basics

Matanga Hill was used as a strategic vantage point during the Vijayanagara Empire, as it was an easy place from which to spot potential invaders. Today, its height attracts visitors looking for great views of the city. There's also a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva at the top. Many Hampi tours include a visit to the hill, from single-day city tours to multi-night tours departing from faraway spots such as Hubli and Bangalore.

• Pack water and sun protection before heading up the hill.
• The hike up the hill is steep and open, and isn't appropriate for people with mobility challenges.

How to get there

Matanga Hill is southwest of Hampi Bazaar. To reach it, you’ll need to hike for about 30 minutes uphill, and the terrain is somewhat rugged, so good shoes are a must. There's no road to the top, so if you’re coming by taxi or on a tour, be prepared to get out of your vehicle and take on a steep ascent.

When to get there

The most popular time to visit Matanga Hill is right before sunset, when the views are particularly magical. Sunrise is another special time to come, and the hike up is much cooler if you go before daybreak. Avoid the mid-afternoon, when high temperatures and strong sun can make the hike up miserable.

Monkey business

You’re likely to encounter some monkeys on your hike up the hill, and it’s wise to be prepared. While they typically keep to themselves, they are opportunists and if you’re carrying any food with you, they might try to snatch it. If possible, leave your snacks at home and try not to get too close to monkeys. Note that small, brown rhesus monkeys tend to be a bit naughtier than the larger, grey-colored langur monkeys.
