Las Palmas’ historic marketplace is an architectural landmark and one of the city’s main food markets. Built in 1891, it’s recognizable for its striking wrought iron arches and is packed with shops and stalls selling fresh produce, deli counters, restaurants, street food, and bakeries.

If you’re exploring the north of Las Palmas or spending the day at Las Canteras Beach, a visit to Mercado del Puerto is the ideal spot for a lunch break, a coffee stop, or to pick up some picnic supplies. Nestled between the harbor and the beach, the buzzing market will give you a taste of local life and cuisine, with about 40 stalls selling a vast range of foods. There are also tapas bars, coffee shops, and small restaurants.
Things to know before you go
Foodies won’t want to miss the Mercado del Puerto, and you’ll find a range of international cuisine, including Cuban, Scandinavian, Turkish, Lebanese, Mexican, Italian, and, of course, traditional Canarian.
Look out for special events and festivals at the marketplace—there’s often live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
The market is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, although access to individual bars and restaurants may vary.
How to get there
Mercado del Puerto is located on Calle Albareda along the Las Palmas peninsula, just north of Puerto de la Luz. The market can be reached by car via Calle Gral Balmes from downtown Las Palmas, and several buses also stop close to the market. Alternatively, it’s about a 10-minute walk from Las Canteras Beach.
When to get there
The market opens at midday and stays open until midnight from Tuesday to Saturday, closing at 4pm on Mondays and 5pm on Sundays. Most visitors time their arrival for lunch or dinner, and it’s busiest and liveliest on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.

There’s plenty to see and do in the capital of Gran Canaria, starting with a walking tour of the old district of Vegueta, where you’ll find the Santa Ana Cathedral, the Canario Museum, and the Casa de Colón Museum, where Christopher Columbus once lived. Afterward, explore the pedestrianized shopping quarter of Triana, stroll around San Telmo Park, and experience traditional Canarian culture at the Pueblo Canario before heading to the urban beach of Las Canteras to swim, surf, or sunbathe.
