Mercado San Camilo
C. San Camilo 218, Arequipa, Peru, 04001
One of Arequipa's favourite spots for shopping and snacking, Mercado San Camilo is the place to go to sample Peruvian dishes and delicacies. Expect to see everything from rows of colorful fruit to cheese stalls and butchers, plus plenty of vendors selling fresh juices and local snacks.
The basics
Although you can find souvenirs for sale at Mercado San Camilo, most of the vendors at this massive market sell culinary items. If you’re visiting from a different part of the world, you’re sure to come across plenty of fruits that may not be easy to find back home—from lúcuma to custard apples—and it’s helpful to go with a guide who can help you navigate some of the must-try fruits and dishes to sample. Many Arequipa tours visit the Mercado San Camilo, including food tours, cooking classes that include shopping for ingredients, and general city tours.
Things to know before you go
Mercado San Camilo is a must for foodies and photographers.
While it's ok to haggle for souvenir items, haggling for small quantities of fruits and vegetables isn’t customary—ask your guide for support about what’s appropriate.
Bring cash: Not all vendors will accept cards.
How to get there
Mercado San Camilo is located in the historic heart of Arequipa, about a 10-minute walk southeast of the Plaza de Armas and 15 minutes on foot from the Santa Catalina Monastery. While taxis are available, most visitors to Arequipa explore on foot, either independently or on a walking tour.
When to get there
Mercado San Camilo is open daily from early morning until well into the evening, except on Sundays when it closes in the early afternoon. Come first thing in the morning for the fewest crowds, or at mealtimes if you want to fill up on local snacks or full-on meals.
Souvenirs from Arequipa
Arequipa is one of the best places in Peru to pick up souvenirs. While Mercado San Camilo is best known for its culinary treats, there are plenty of handicrafts available in the market and just up the street near the Plaza de Armas. Popular items include alpaca sweaters, little box shrines known as retablos, and—for the kids—furry little alpaca toys.
