POINT OF INTEREST

Mindil Beach

The Gardens, Darwin, Northern Territory, 0820

Mindil Beach is Darwin’s flagship beach. With golden sands and palm-fringed shores looking out over the Beagle Gulf, it’s an idyllic spot for sun-seekers and swimmers. It’s also renowned for its tropical sunsets, and crowds turn out at sundown to watch the spectacle and browse the seasonal night markets.

The basics

Sun-seekers head to Mindil Beach to stroll and sunbathe, although it’s best to avoid swimming—the waters around Darwin are known for their crocodiles and jellyfish. Pack a picnic and stick around to watch the sunset from the shore, a favorite pastime among locals. Explore the tree-lined parks of the Mindil Beach Reserve, which stretches along the coast; or visit the Mindil Beach Casino Resort, which has a day spa, lagoon pool, and a huge casino. During the dry season, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, held right by the beachside, are one of the city’s most popular attractions.

Things to know before you go

  • The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are one of Darwin’s must-visit sites and popular with kids, who can enjoy live entertainment, face painting, bouncy castles, and other activities.
  • The Mindil Beach Reserve has restrooms, picnic areas, a playground, and a number of cafés. The beach is patrolled from June to September.
  • The beach has ramp access for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Mindil Beach is located about 2 miles (3 kilometers) northwest of Darwin city center. It’s just a 5-minute drive or taxi ride from downtown and free parking is available (although it can fill up quickly on market nights). Buses #4 and #6 stop on Gilruth Avenue, just a 2-minute walk from the beach.

When to get there

The sun shines all year-round in Darwin, but it can be unbearably hot on the beach during the wet season (November to March), so visit early or late in the day, and avoid sunbathing during the hottest periods. The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are typically held from April to October, and most travelers time their visit to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner at the markets.

Mindil Beach Sunset Markets

Held every Thursday and Sunday throughout the dry season, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are a tradition beloved by both locals and travelers. More than 200 stalls stretch along the beachside parklands, with a mix of local designers, artisans, jewelry, and other handicrafts. As well as shopping for unique souvenirs and gifts, choose from around 60 different food stalls serving cuisine from all around the globe, and enjoy live entertainment—including musical acts, street performers, and circus acts.
