Minerva’s Shrine

Edgar Pl, Chester, England

While there’s not a great deal left of it to see, Minerva’s Shrine in Edgar’s Park remains an important piece of Chester’s Roman history. The remains of the rock-carved shrine to the pagan Roman goddess date back to the second century, when Chester was occupied by the Romans and known to its people as the city of Deva.

The basics

Minerva’s Shrine sits near a playground and the River Dee in Edgar’s Field, and many visitors don’t even realise it’s there. Unfortunately, having been left exposed to the elements, the Roman shrine today looks as ancient as it actually is.

If you’re lucky enough to catch it in the right light conditions, you can make out the shape of the goddess with an owl on her shoulder, watching over the Romans working in the Deva quarries nearby.

Things to know before you go

  • The site appeals to history buffs, archaeologists, and those interested in Chester’s Roman past.

  • Families may enjoy a low-key trip to Edgar’s Field, where a playground and picnic area await.

  • There are plenty of eateries, coffee bars, and shops nearby.

  • The entrance to Edgar’s Field from Old Dee Bridge is accessible to wheelchairs, but there’s no paved pathway to the shrine itself.

How to get there

Minerva’s Shrine is in the center of Edgar’s Field, a public park in the Handbridge neighborhood. It’s easy to reach on foot from Chester city center, crossing over the River Dee via Old Dee Bridge. Leave your car at Little Roodee if driving, which is the closest paid parking lot to the park.

When to get there

Since the shrine is in a public park, you can visit it throughout the year during daylight hours. Bear in mind that the site is outdoors and rainy weather is common in the northern city of Chester; aim to visit it on a bright and sunny day, if you can.

On the trail of Chester’s Roman past

If you want to know more about Chester’s Roman roots, head to the Grosvenor Museum to learn about life in the city during the Roman occupation. Entry is free—although donations are welcome—and on the ground floor you’ll find a collection of different Roman artifacts, such as tombstones, coins, pottery, and metalwork.
