POINT OF INTEREST

Minimundus

Villacher Str. 241, Klagenfurt, Austria, 9020

See the world in small at Klagenfurt’s Minimundus, a model village near the lake. Educational and enjoyable for all ages, the mostly outdoor park showcases replica landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, CN Tower, and St. Peter’s Basilica, all recreated in accurate detail. Miniature steam trains, ships in ponds, and interactive displays add to the fun.

The basics

The outdoor park has a map and a route marked by arrows that you can follow. Information signs are displayed in several languages, including English and German, to give you the lowdown as you wander your way to faraway lands. There’s also a small Indoor Adventure World with a 4D cinema, globes, a slide, and interactive displays. Minimundus sometimes features on private tour itineraries, along with the nearby Abenteuer Affenberg monkey park. Transport and admission tickets are often included.

Things to know before you go

  • Put aside 2-3 hours for the park, or longer if you want lunch there.

  • Children under five can enter for free. Note that there are no discounts for visitors with the Kärtnen Card.

  • Bring a hat and sun lotion on sunny days, as there is limited shade. If you have a reusable water bottle, you can refill it from the various water fountains.

  • On-site amenities include a restaurant, gift shop, restrooms, a baby change area, and an adventure playground aimed at smaller kids.

  • The site is dog-friendly; four-legged friends can enter for free on a leash.

How to get there

Minimundus is close to both Lake Wörthersee and the city of Klagenfurt. Take the train to Klagenfurt West, and walk for a few minutes to find the entrance. By bus, take the local Stadtwerke Klagenfurt on routes 10 and 20 and hop off at the Minimundus bus stop. Drivers from outside town will find it easy to reach, too. Take the Minimundus exit from the A2 highway and park in front of the attraction.

When to get there

The site is open from late March through early November. In the quieter months of March, April, October, and November, the doors are open from morning through early evening; in the peak months, the doors stay open longer into the evening. Last admission is always an hour before closure time.

Family-friendly highlights of the park

Minimundus is a great option for families with kids. If you’re visiting in the summer, kids can trace Phileas Fogg’s Around the World in 80 Days on an adventure trail around the park. Those who check off all the sights and correctly answer the questions can win a special certificate when they leave. Ask for more information at the admission desk.
