POINT OF INTEREST

Mont-Saint-Michel

La Caserne, Normandy, 50170

Soaring up out of the bay, Mont-St-Michel seems as dramatic today as it must have been to its medieval pilgrims, who braved quicksand and strong tidal waves to reach it. Today, visitors cross the bay by easier means (shuttle bus or walking with a guide) to see historical treasures inside its intact fortress walls. For many, a highlight of the UNESCO–listed island is the abbey, where nuns and monks keep Mont-St-Michel’s religious heritage alive.

The basics

Visiting Mont-Saint-Michel as a day trip from Paris is a popular way to explore the medieval island, and opting for a tour saves you time and the hassle of arranging your own transportation. Plus, many tours include access to the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey (Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel). The island is also easy to reach from Caen and Bayeux, both of which offer access to wider Normandy and places such as the D-Day landing beaches of World War II and the coastal village of Honfleur.

Things to know before you go

  • The parking lot is located on the mainland; a shuttle runs from the lot to a drop-off point close to the entrance.

  • The village is full of narrow walkways and steps, so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for crowds.

  • There are no stairs from the parking lot to the entrance, but 350 steps lead from the top of the main street to the abbey.

  • Wi-Fi is available at the tourist office in the village.

How to get there

Mont-Saint-Michel is located in a bay between Normandy and Brittany about 220 miles (354 kilometers) west of Paris, roughly four hours away by road. Driving or taking a bus tour is the quickest way to reach the island, but train and public bus options are also available through Caen, Rennes, and Pontorson.

When to get there

The site's tourist office is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year's Day, while the abbey is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25. As a small island, it's a popular destination with limited space, so arrive early to avoid the crowds, which are biggest in summer.

Exploring the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel

After paying your entrance fee to the abbey, grab a visitor's guide for a self-guided tour of the Gothic landmark's cloister and rooms. Alternatively, guided 75-minute tours in French and English are available year-round; they are included in Mont-Saint-Michel tickets with no reservation required. To hear commentary without a live guide, purchase a 1-hour audio guide for a small fee.

Ways to explore

An outing to Mont-St-Michel is a full-day affair, and it’s a place that many travelers to France feel they have to see. For this reason, there are numerous Mont-St-Michel day trips from Paris that cover transportation and sometimes abbey entry. If you go this route, expect to spend 14–15 hours round-trip.

If you have more time available, consider staying overnight in a hotel on Mont-St-Michel, or staying a few days in Bayeux, Rennes, or Cannes. All are significantly closer than Paris, and there are organized day trips from each city.

Accessibility

Visitors with reduced mobility have dedicated parking in the P2 lot, and the shuttle is accessible. However, the Mont-St-Michel village is steep and narrow with uneven terrain, and the historic abbey is only partially accessible.

Address

Mont-St-Michel is around an hour east of St. Malo, or just over an hour from Rennes. If you plan to walk up to it on foot, you must book an official guide who can navigate the bay safely, with knowledge of quicksand and tides.

Driving

Once you approach the coast, you’ll see signs to Mont-St-Michel’s different parking lots, which are open 24/7. For standard cars, you can park in the lots P5–7 or P10–13. Others are reserved for visitors with reduced mobility, hotel guests, and different vehicles. The parking charge is valid for 24 hours and includes “le Passeur” (the shuttle bus).

Public transportation

The nearest train station to Mont-St-Michel is Pontorson, and this is well served by TER trains from Rennes. From here, local buses take you straight to Mont-St-Michel. This takes around 25 minutes, and you can hop off near the parking lots or just before the entry to the village of Mont-St-Michel.

Best times to visit

If you’re visiting on your own, come as early as possible to avoid the arrival of tour buses around mid-morning. Similarly, late afternoons and evenings are quieter, after many travelers depart.

Best days to visit

Weekdays are quieter with fewest visitors, so visit midweek if you can.

Best months to visit

During the fall and winter, there’s less tourism and cooler temperatures. Plus, the spectacle of seeing Mont-St-Michel in misty conditions adds a touch of drama to a visit.

Special events

In the summer season, events such as light shows and concerts take place in Mont-St-Michel. The schedule is typically released by the Normandy tourist board around springtime.
