The tallest point in Menorca is Monte Toro, also called El Toro, where you can see the entire island on clear days. Built atop the summit is the Mare de Déu del Toro sanctuary, a significant pilgrimage place with a shrine to Menorca’s patron saint. There, a whitewashed exterior leads to a small chapel with a carved image of the Virgin Mary.

A road winds to the top of Monte Toro, climbing to great views and an important Menorcan church. Since Monte Toro is a key landmark on the island, it’s an included stop on many tours of Menorca. Independent travelers can come by car or follow a hiking trail to the top. At the Mare de Déu del Toro sanctuary, pay your respects to the Toro Virgin, who is the patron saint of Menorcans.

How to get there
Monte Toro is near Es Mercadal in the center of Menorca, near the intersection of the Me-1 and Me-15 roads. From Mahón, it’s a 15-mile (24-kilometer) drive, and from Ciutadella de Menorca, it’s a 19-mile (31-kilometer) drive. The road to the top of Monte Toro is the Me-13.
When to get there
With wonderful views across the island of Menorca, it’s no surprise that Monte Toro is a favorite destination for sunsets. Plan to arrive early to enjoy the show, but bring layered clothing since it’s frequently windy here. If you come in the evening, the Mare de Déu del Toro sanctuary may be closed.
Where to watch the sunset in Menorca
There are plenty of great places to watch the Menorca sunset. Favorites include the Cavalleria Lighthouse on the northern coast, Castell de Sant Nicolau, and the Torre de Fornells. For sweeping sea views and a quiet spot that’s near Ciutadella de Menorca, head to the cliffs of Torre des Castellar.
