Montenegro Niagara Falls
Podgorica, Montenegro, 97MH+CM
Once you move past the maybe overly grand aspirations of its name, the Montenegro Niagara Falls offer a picturesque place to visit outside of Podgorica. The clear turquoise water of the Cemi River flows over these falls into a tight gorge lined with a jumble of rippling rocks—a pretty waterfall without the clouds of mist and the deafening roar of its namesake.
The basics
Because of its location well outside the city of Podgorica, the Montenegro Niagara Falls aren’t somewhere you casually or spontaneously visit. Most travelers will find 15 minutes plenty to admire the falls and scramble along the gorge cliffs, but you can round out your visit with a swim or a meal at the waterside restaurant. The falls are too small for a dedicated tour, but are often included as a stop on Lake Skadar tours leaving from Podgorica.
Things to know before you go
- A large restaurant overlooking the waterfall offers the only amenities and facilities in the area.
- Uneven ground surrounds the waterfalls, and is only accessible by a narrow staircase
- Parents will need to closely watch children (or perhaps skip this site), as there are no safety railings and plenty of trip hazards.
- Bring closed-toe shoes if you plan on walking along the rugged rocks of the cliffs.
How to get there
The Montenegro Niagara Falls are located south of the city, out toward Podgorica Airport, and can be reached in about 15 minutes by car from the city center. The L30 bus runs from the Mall of Montenegro to the waterfall’s parking lot, though the bus route doesn’t operate that frequently.
When to get there
To see the falls at their most powerful, come during April or May as snow melts upstream of the Cemi River. In June and July, visitors come to swim as well. The waterfall and river are often bone dry by mid-to-late August.
Other places to visit on Podgorica’s outskirts
Travelers who head farther out of Podgorica’s center will find interesting attractions in most directions. North of the city lies the Ancient Doclea Ruins, a relatively simple archaeological site. East of the city in the hills of Vrbica, you’ll find the Ancient Illyrian City of Meteon and a good observation point looking down to Podgorica. Finally, the cave temple at Dajbabe Monastery sits southwest of the city center.
