Monumento Ventana al Mundo
Rotonda Cl. 110, Barranquilla, Colombia
Designed by Barranquilla-born architect Diana Escorcia, the Monumento Ventana al Mundo (Window to the World) towers over the Colombian city on the Caribbean coast. At 147 feet (45 meters) high, this avant-garde architectural landmark is made from aluminium, steel, and glass, and serves as a symbol of Barranquilla’s progression and modernity.
The basics
Most travelers see Monumento Ventana al Mundo during Barranquilla sightseeing tours; the monument features on most tour itineraries, thanks to its status as a city symbol. Tours typically transport you between multiple sights by car and often combine Monumento Ventana al Mundo with highlights such as Museo del Carnaval, which is dedicated to the history and traditions of the UNESCO-listed revelry, and Gran Malecon, a lively waterfront entertainment hub.
Things to know before you go
The area surrounding the monument is wheelchair-accessible, as it’s flat and even.
There are sometimes food vendors selling snacks close to the monument.
Due to its location in an industrial part of the city, there aren’t many restaurants or hotels nearby.
How to get there
Monumento Ventana al Mundo is outside the center of Barranquilla at Rotonda, Cl. 110. Public transport doesn’t stop nearby, but you can drive to the monument via Cra. 65A in 10 minutes. There are no zebra crossings leading to the monument, so be careful when crossing the busy main road it’s in the middle of.
When to get there
Monumento Ventana al Mundo is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The best time to visit is during the evening when its bright colors change intermittently and look particularly fabulous against the night sky. To avoid heat and humidity, visit Barranquilla during the dry season of November through February.
What to do at Gran Malecon
Just a 10-minute drive from Monumento Ventana al Mundo, you’ll come to Gran Malecon, a promenade adjacent to the Magdalena River. It’s a must-visit place in Barranquilla, as it’s home to a giant golden statue of Shakira—the singer was born and raised in Barranquilla—and Caiman del Rio, a street food hub shaped like a caiman.
