POINT OF INTEREST

Moorilla Winery

655 Main Road, Berriedale, Hobart, Tasmania, 7011

Founded in 1960 by Italian immigrant Claudio Alcorso, Moorilla was among the first wineries to be established on the island of Tasmania. It was acquired in 1995 by gambler and art collector David Walsh, best known as the founder of the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), which sits on the same property north of Hobart.

The basics

Moorilla offers regular tastings, vineyard tours, and special programs, such as Moorilla Decanted, which includes guided tastings of the winery's three categories in its on-site wine bunker. Most people who visit the winery also check out the art at Mona, on the same property. To make a day of it, try out the Tasmanian fare at the Source restaurant or sit down to French fare at Faro Bar + Restaurant, both on Mona property.

Things to know before you go

  • You'll need to buy an admission ticket to Mona to visit Moorilla Winery.

  • The minimum drinking age in Australia is 18, and guests who appear younger may be asked to show ID upon entry at Moorilla.

  • If you aren’t visiting Moorilla as part of a tour, book your tasting using the winery’s online reservation system. Group bookings are by email, and some experiences have a maximum of seven participants.

How to get there

Moorilla Winery is located inside the Mona in Berriedale, about a 20-minute drive north of central Hobart. If you’re coming by bus, take line 510 or 605 from New Town Road in central Hobart to stop No. 33, about a 10-minute walk from the winery. You can also reach Moorilla via the high-speed ferry departing from the Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront.

When to get there

Moorilla Winery is open Friday–Monday throughout the year and Thursday–Monday from late December–March. Like the museum, the winery gets more crowded on weekends. A great time to visit is for the Dark Mofo festivities in June, which ring in winter with live music and art.

Visiting Mona

Mona is one of the Hobart area's top attractions, and it's best to give yourself a couple of hours to explore the exhibits before or after your winery visit. Here, you'll find contemporary art pieces and installations from the private collection of Moorilla Winery’s owner, David Walsh. Many of these pieces toe the line between whimsical and whacky.
