Morro do Careca
Ponta Negra, Rio Grande do Norte, 59090-210
This large sand dune, located in the center of Natal, has become the main symbol of the city and the state of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. Gracing the front of most Natal postcards, Morro do Careca rises 394 feet (120 meters) from the ground at the southern end of busy Ponta Negra beach—one of Natal’s most popular destinations.
The basics
Partially covered by lush green vegetation, this natural attraction is a combination of rich Atlantic Forest and a smooth sand surface that gives it its name—meaning "bald hill," due to its likeness to a receding hairline. The dune was once a popular recreation spot for skibunda (sand boarding), but climbing it is now prohibited to preserve the forest and prevent erosion. Colorful Brazilian fishing boats called jangadas dot the coastline beneath it.
Things to know before you go
Guided boat tours that travel around Morro do Careca are available.
Morro do Careca and Alagamar beach (where turtles nest) are restricted areas.
Expect larger crowds of tourists and Brazilians on weekends and holidays.
Here, barranqueiros set up barracas (tents, beach umbrellas, and chairs) for a fee or for those who buy their beer, soft drinks, and water.
How to get there
Morro do Careca is located at the southern end of Ponta Negra beach in the Ponta Negra neighborhood of Natal. Although you’re not allowed to climb Morro do Careca, you can take a guided boat tour to view it from the water. You can reach Ponta Negra beach by bus or taxi.
When to get there
Thanks to Natal’s equatorial climate, you’ll be able to experience plenty of sunshine throughout the year, with water temperatures remaining around 82°F (28°C). Because of that, the off-peak season (May–September) is a good option if you’re looking for fewer tourists and cheaper accommodations. Throughout Brazil, you can expect the largest crowds for Carnival, which takes place every year around Ash Wednesday.
Ponta Negra Beach (Praia de Ponta Negra)
One of Natal’s most popular and accessible beaches, Ponta Negra used to be a small fishing village. It is now a bustling seaside scene filled with restaurants, bars, and hotels, especially along its southern end. The sand itself is lined with huts known as barracas that sell food and drink.
