The basics

The hike is considered to be of a moderate-to-difficult level—while it’s only 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) each way, there are some steep and slippery sections. Though there is no signage, the path is fairly easy to follow. The summit is 1,749 feet (533 meters) above sea level, with an elevation change of 1,073 feet (327 meters).

The trail departs from the Vidigal favela. While Rio’s favelas, or shantytowns, typically have a poor reputation among travelers, Vidigal has made vast improvements over recent years and is generally considered safe. However, some travelers will still feel more comfortable visiting in the company of a local guide. Hiking tours can be combined with visits to the favela, and some tour operators donate part of their fee to the community, creating tourism experiences that support local people.

Things to know before you go

• The trail can be rocky and slippery, so wear sturdy footwear with a good grip.

• Don’t bring any valuables with you on the trail; crime can still be an issue in Vidigal.

• Bring sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially if you’re hiking in the middle of the day.

• If you take a moto-taxi, confirm the fare before getting on.

How to get there

The trailhead begins at the northwest corner of Campo do Vidigal, a gated soccer field. You can take a public bus to Vidigal and then a moto-taxi (motorcycle taxi) to the trailhead, or walk from the main road through Vidigal to the trailhead. Otherwise take a taxi or rideshare directly to the trail: Tell your driver that you’re going to “Dois Irmãos” or “a trilha” (“the trail” in Portuguese).

When to get there

Morro Dois Irmaos is rated as one of the best sunset spots in Rio de Janeiro. If you want to catch the golden light of the sun setting over the city, be sure to bring a headlamp, as navigating the path in darkness can be dangerous. The hike takes around 90 minutes round-trip.

Pedra Bonita

For another Rio de Janeiro hike with a view, consider Pedra Bonita, about a 20-minute drive northwest. Located in the Tijuca forest, close to the city's main hang glider launch ramp, the summit offers panoramic views of Barra da Tijuca, the west of Rio, Leblon, and Ipanema, and only takes about 25 minutes to reach.
