Mosque of Christ of the Light (Mezquita Del Cristo De La Luz)
Calle Cristo de la Luz 22, Toledo, Spain, 45002
Toledo’s oldest standing monument, the Mosque of Christ the Light (Mezquita Del Cristo De La Luz) dates back more than 1,000 years. Inspired by the Mosque of Córdoba, it’s the only remaining mosque in Toledo, and was converted to a church in 1186, after the Christian reconquest of the city.
The basics
Two different ticket options are available for the mosque: an individual ticket, which is good for two days, or a tourist wristband, which offers entry to six other top Toledo monuments. Inside the building, you can admire unique ceiling vaults and faded frescoes, and enjoy sweeping views of the city from the garden. Most guided tours of Toledo, including half-day and full-day tours from Madrid, also include a stop at the mosque.
Things to know before you go
The mosque is ideal for history buffs, architecture fans, and first-time visitors.
An audio guide is available and provides a lot of information.
Watch your step on the cobblestone streets and paths around the museum, including in the garden.
How to get there
The mosque is located in the northern part of Toledo, west of Plaza de Zocodover. It’s easily reachable from anywhere in the Old Quarter of the city. It’s included as part of many city sightseeing tours from Madrid, which includes round-trip transfers to Toledo.
When to get there
The mosque is open daily from mid-morning until early evening (March through mid-October) or an hour earlier (mid-October to February). It’s closed on January 1 and December 25. Final admission is 10 minutes before closing time. The site is fairly small, and won’t take very much time to explore, though you should leave time to explore the gardens and soak up views of the city.
Which seven monuments are included in the Toledo tourist wristband
The mosque is one of seven major monuments that you can visit with the Toledo tourist wristband. The others are the Royal College of Doncellas Nobles (a former girls school), the Church of the Jesuits, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes Santo Tomé (home to an El Greco masterpiece), Church of El Salvador (known for its ornate Visigothic pillar), and the Former Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca.
