An important part of Foz do Iguaçu’s diverse cultural heritage, the white Mosque of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab is a brilliant example of Islamic architecture. Plus, it boasts the accolade of being the second-largest mosque in Latin America. A huge dome is flanked by two towering minarets, and inside the mosque, there are information exhibits about Islamic culture and history.
The basics
The Mosque of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab is free for Muslims to enter, and otherwise an admission ticket is needed. The mosque is often featured on sightseeing tours of Foz do Iguaçu, which typically also visit the Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, a modernist cathedral perched at the city’s highest point, and the Three Borders Landmark (Marco das Tres Fronteiras), where Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina meet.
Things to know before you go
To enter the mosque you’ll need to wear long clothing and head coverings, which are provided as part of the ticket price. The mosque is an active place of worship, so maintain a respectful silence throughout your visit. A gift shop at the mosque sells Islamic souvenirs and copies of the Quran. You must remove your shoes to enter the mosque.
How to get there
The Mosque of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab is located in the Central Garden in Foz do Iguaçu. Many sightseeing tours will take you to the mosque, or you can use public transportation; buses 10, 55, and 102 stop nearby.
When to get there
The mosque is open to visitors outside of Muslim prayer times. Monday to Friday you can visit in the morning or the late afternoon. On Saturday, the mosque is only open in the morning.
