Mount Gay Rum Visitor Center

Mighty Grynner Highway, Bridgetown, Saint Michael

Barbados is considered the birthplace of rum, and Mount Gay Distillery—founded in 1703—is the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery. For three centuries, residents and visiting sailors have sipped its sweet golden nectar. Learn how rum is made at Mount Gay Visitor Centre, and taste the drink that shaped Barbados.

Standard tours follow the creation of rum from sugar cane harvest to fermentation, and show how the liquid is carefully bottled for shipment across the globe. You’ll also learn about the distillery’s history, hear tales of rum’s seafaring roots, and watch a film on rum production. Then, sample the smooth rums in the tasting room or at the main bar.

Dive deeper at Mount Gay with a cocktail-making workshop or traditional Bajan lunch, which both offer insight into local culture and how deeply it’s entwined with rum.

  • The visitor center is wheelchair- and stroller- accessible.

  • Head to the on-site gift shop to buy bottles of rum—prices are typically lower here than at the airport.

  • Visitors must be 18 years or older to sample the rums.

The Mount Gay Visitor Centre is located in Bridgetown, a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive from the cruise port. It’s a 30-minute drive west of the airport; if you don’t have your own vehicle, you can book a tour that includes transportation.

The visitor center is typically open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. From October through April, it is also open on Saturdays. Tours are offered at various times throughout the day and last from one hour (for the signature tasting experience) to three hours for an evening of cocktail-making.

Mount Gay is one of four rum distilleries on the island. You can also visit St. Nicholas Abbey, Barbados’ oldest plantation house with a long history of rum production; West Indies Rum Distillery, which produces Blue Chair Bay Rum; and the Foursquare Rum Distillery, which makes Rum Sixty Six on the site of a former sugar factory dating back to 1636.
