Mount Hutt
Christchurch, Canterbury
Towering high above the Canterbury Plains, Mt. Hutt Ski Area is an award-winning, internationally recognized ski resort suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. But it’s not only a hot destination during ski season—there’s plenty to do during the summer, including hiking, hot-air ballooning, and jet boating in the Rakaia Gorge.
The Basics
The Mt. Hutt ski field is a fully-equipped ski resort with a wide range of trails for all skiers and snowboarders, from beginner runs at the base of the mountain to double black diamond trails running down the mountain’s South Face. You can also go sledding or do some sightseeing; take the chairlift up to Summit Six, which, at about 6,850 feet (2,088 meters) high, has stunning views over the Canterbury Plains.
When the slopes are closed, there’s still plenty to do. Mt. Hutt has a range of hiking tracks, from the easy Rakaia Gorge Walkway to the challenging Scotts Saddle track, and recreational activities like jet boating, hot-air ballooning, fishing, and golf are all available. And you can don your swimsuit and soak in the Mt. Hutt hot tub, the highest-altitude hot tub in New Zealand.
Things to Know Before You Go
You need an NZSki mypass to get onto the slopes. Order online in advance or purchase one at a Guest Services desk on the mountain.
Ski gear and clothing is available for sale or rent from the on-site ski shop.
You can rent a locker for a small fee.
There are plenty of cafés and bars on the mountain, including the à la carte restaurant Huber’s Hut.
Mt. Hutt has day-care programs for children aged from 3 months to 17 years, and children 10 and under can ski for free.
How to Get There
Mt. Hutt Ski Area is roughly a 2-hour drive from Christchurch and less than an hour from Methven by road. If driving, there’s plenty of parking, but you must carry snow chains at all times in case the weather turns. Alternatively, a bus runs from Methven regularly, and a shuttle runs from Christchurch and Methven every morning.
When to Get There
Mt. Hutt’s ski season is early June to early October. If you’re planning on skiing, it’s best to visit the mountain in deep winter (July or August) to take advantage of the peak snowfall. Arrive early so you can easily find parking and enjoy a full day on the slopes.
A Great Slope for Beginners
Mt. Hutt has a range of private and group packages available for those who want to learn how to tackle the ski slopes. You can choose a 1- to 3-day starter pack, which includes personal trainer sessions, gear rental, and a beginner lift pass. Or book a comprehensive Intro to Snow course, which includes four days of lessons and lift passes.
