Mshiri Village

On the outskirts of Marangu, Mshiri Village is an excellent spot for travelers to learn about the indigenous Chagga people of the area. While many people just pass through on their way to hike nearby Kilimanjaro, it's worth sticking around for a while to learn about the cultural and culinary traditions of the region.
The basics
Mshiri Village is part of the greater Marangu area, and it's right on the way to the Marangu route up Mount Kilimanjaro (the most popular route of them all). Many people stay closer to the center of Marangu and then visit other parts of the area as part of a day tour. If you're interested in learning about the Chagga people, pick a tour that includes a visit to the nearby Chagga Museum.

Mshiri Village is an excellent place to go if you want to learn about Chagga culture.
Always ask permission before you take photos of people, and be aware that some people may want a tip for letting you take their picture.
Wheelchair users and travelers with mobility constraints may find getting around the village challenging.
How to get there
Mshiri Village is situated just north of Marangu, about a 10-minute taxi ride north of Marangu town center and a 10-minute drive south from the edge of Kilimanjaro National Park. If you're on a tour from Marangu or Moshi, your operator will likely provide round-trip transportation from your hotel.
When to get there
Most people visiting Mshiri Village also spend some time in Kilimanjaro National Park for shorter treks or multi-day summiting adventures. The best conditions for hiking in the park are during the dry season, which runs from late May or June until October, and it’s generally more pleasant in Mshiri when there’s little to no rain. Just note that this is also the region's most crowded time of year.
