POINT OF INTEREST

Mt. Fansipan

Sapa, Vietnam

Mt. Fansipan is one of the highest peaks in Indochina at 10,212 feet (3,143 meters). It’s part of Vietnam’s Hoang Lien Son Range. Climbers undertake a challenging task, and since the weather changes, there’s usually some mist or cloud cover along the way. But, no matter what the weather is like, there are always options for some dramatic photos along the way.

The basics

You have a few options to reach the peak of Mt. Fansipan, which is about 7.5 miles (12.5 kilometers) each way. Head to Sapa, and from here go on to Tram Ton Pass Trail at the entrance to Thac Tinh Yeu, or Love Waterfall. You can climb on your own, or take the cable car either one or both ways. It generally takes people between 6–8 hours to climb up the mountain, so keep that in mind when planning your hike.

Things to know before you go

  • Make sure to wear light and windproof clothes, but be prepared for weather changes and chilly weather at the summit.

  • Be sure to stay hydrated along the route, and bring enough with you for the ascent.

  • There are restaurants on top of the mountain, so if you need a burger, you’re in business.

  • Don’t trek alone, since the weather may change quickly and become disorientating, and often there are loose rocks which could be potential hazards.

How to get there

Make your way to Sapa by either a bus or private car for the most direct route. The nearest train station is 22 miles (35 kilometers) from Sapa, so you need to arrange transport for that second leg if you take the train. From Sapa town, take a short taxi to get to the starting point of the Mt. Fansipan climb.

When to get there

Hike Mt. Fansipan in either spring or fall for the best weather options. Spring is best for seeing wildflowers in bloom along the trail, but you’ll see lots of misty clouds. Fall is generally the dry season, so the skies should be clear and blue, making for better views from the trails or the cable car.

Go sightseeing in Sapa

For a more gentle hike, make some time to explore the landscape around Sapa while you’re in the area. The rolling rice terraces are beautiful in all seasons, and it’s fun to walk through different villages, seeing how different cultural groups go about life. Think about booking a homestay for an added layer of cultural learning, and maybe even help cook your delicious Vietnamese dinner in a local’s kitchen.
