Mt. Kozjak (Mali Kozjak)
Slovenia
With sweeping views across the Bay of Kastela and Split, rugged but low-lying Mt. Kozjak (Mali Kozjak) offers hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and ziplining. There are around 50 miles (80 kilometers) of marked trails through forest and over open ground, some running across to neighboring mountains. Tiny and photogenic chapels add cultural interest to the summits.
The basics
While the highest summit, Veli Vrj, is just 2,556 feet (779 meters) tall, the chapels provide fun endpoints for hikes that can be as short as 1–2 hours. You can explore Mt. Kozjak on foot, by mountain bike, by all-terrain vehicle (ATV), or in a Jeep, but many travelers come here for Zip Line Split, which offers six ziplines and a suspension bridge spanning around 8,200 feet (2,500 meters)—almost as long as the Golden Gate Bridge.
Things to know before you go
Mt. Kozjak is a great choice for hikers, adventurers, and photographers.
You can spend anything from a 15-minute photo stop to a multi-day hike exploring Mt. Kozjak.
Overnight hikers can stay in mountain huts, some of which serve food during the day.
Wear solid shoes for the loose rock paths: Hiking boots are better than sneakers if you have them.
Bring plenty of water, particularly if hiking during summer.
Mt. Kozjak’s paths are not wheelchair-friendly. Parents will want to use back carriers rather than strollers.
How to get there
Mt. Kozjak is about a 12-mile (20-kilometer) drive around the bay from Split. Many travelers join tours or rent cars, but there are also suburban train services: Kastel Sucurac station brings you to the east of the mountain, Kastel Stari to the west. Marked trails run from towns including Klis and the seven towns of Kastela Bay.
When to get there
Late spring, summer, and early fall (May through mid-October) are the best times to visit Mt. Kozjak, with more clement weather. Mountain huts are more often open on weekends.
Croatia’s best ziplines
Croatia’s rugged terrain lends itself to zipline adventures on Mt. Kozjak and beyond. Zipline Dubrovnik lets you race down from Mt. Srd with sunset views over the city walls and red-tiled roofs of Dubrovnik to the Adriatic Sea. Zipline Croatia: Cetina Canyon Zipline Adventure from Omis crisscrosses the Cetina River gorge, with one zipline spanning an impressive 2,300 feet (700 meters).
