Mukteswara Temple
Bhubaneswar, Odisha
Dating back to the 10th century, the Mukteswara Temple draws in visitors for both its historical and spiritual significance. It's dedicated to the Lord Shiva, and many devotees come to seek his blessings, while others visit to admire the Kalinga architecture for which the temple is known.
The basics
Architectural points of interest at the temple include an intricately carved arch entryway, known as a torana, a feature more commonly found in Buddhist structures from the period. While it’s a Hindu temple, other Buddhist motifs can be found throughout the complex—ask your guide to point these out. The Mukteswara Temple can be visited on many Bhubaneswar tours, including private and small-group tours that focus on the city's key temples.
Things to know before you go
- The Mukteswara Temple is a must-see for architecture fans and spiritual seekers.
- Unlike at many temples in Bhubaneswar, foreign visitors are allowed inside the Mukteswara Temple.
- You should dress modestly when visiting the temple, with clothing that covers your shoulders, knees, and decollete.
- You'll need to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
How to get there
The Mukteswara Temple is located in Kedar Gouri Park in Bhubaneswar, about a 10-minute drive south of the Bhubaneswar Railway Station. The easiest way to get there is by taking an auto-rickshaw or taxi, or by joining a tour that includes round-trip transportation from your hotel.
When to get there
The temple opens early in the morning and stays open well into the evening. If you visit right when it opens, it’s unlikely to be crowded, though the evenings—just before the temple closes—can be busy. Visit Bhubaneswar between mid-October and March for the most pleasant weather. During this time of year, rainfall is relatively low and temperatures are slightly cooler.
Bhubaneswar's famous temples
If you're interested in visiting temples—or just love thousand-year-old architecture—you'll have plenty to keep you busy in Bhubaneswar (but note that some temples don't allow foreigners to enter). Two of the most popular sites are the Lingaraja Temple, an 11th-century Shaivite temple that foreign visitors can see from a viewing platform, and the Brahmeswara Temple, which many believe dates back to the 9th century. Most people visit both temples back to back.
