POINT OF INTEREST

Musée du Vin de Bourgogne (Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne)

24 rue Paradis ou, Beaune, France, 21200

Burgundy’s long history of winemaking is the focus of the Musée du Vin de Bourgogne, housed in the 14th-century Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne. Inside, you can admire old wine presses and winemaking equipment through the ages, brush up on your knowledge of Burgundy wine, and learn about the UNESCO–listed Climats, terroirs of the region.

The basics

Many walking and sightseeing tours of Beaune visit the Musée du Vin de Bourgogne, and it’s worth going with a guide to learn more about the winemaking process. A visit to the museum is also the ideal prelude to a wine-tasting tour of the surrounding vineyards. Get to know Burgundy wine regions, appellations and traditions, and admire the fascinating collection of historical winemaking paraphernalia.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum building, a medieval half-timbered hotel, is a listed Historical Monument.

  • There is a small admission fee to visit the museum.

  • Most of the exhibitions are translated into English, and English-language tours are also available.

  • The historic building that houses the museum is unfortunately not easily accessible for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.

How to get there

The Musée du Vin de Bourgogne is located in the Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne along Rue Paradis in the heart of the Old Town. It’s easy to walk there from anywhere in the Old Town, and buses stop at Place des Halles, just a 2-minute walk away.

When to get there

The museum is open daily except Tuesdays from the end of March through early November, and during the November Wine Auction. Opening hours may vary, but it’s typically open between morning and early evening, and closes for an hour at lunchtime. Last entry is 30 minutes before closure. The most exciting time to visit the museum is during the annual Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, but the world-famous event draws big crowds.

Visiting Beaune’s museums

Beaune’s walled Old Town has several interesting museums. Along with the Musée du Vin de Bourgogne, there’s also the Fallot Mustard Museum, Burgundy’s last remaining artisanal mustard factory, and the recently opened Maison des Climats, devoted to Burgundy’s UNESCO-listed wine region. Most visited is the magnificent 15th-century Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu), a turreted medieval building that is best known for its colorful roof tiles and annual wine auction, but also houses an art museum.
