Musée Granet
Pl. Saint-Jean de Malte, Aix-en-Provence, France, 13100
Central Aix-en-Provence's Musée Granet showcases a mix of archeological artifacts and European art and sculpture, mostly dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Just around the corner, an annex branch of the museum displays much of the collection of the late art collector Jean Planque, including works by Cezanne, Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas.
The basics
Some private city tours give visitors the option of spending time at the museum, and staff-led museum tours in English typically take place once a month during the June–September high season. Audio tours are available for a fee, with special tours for kids focused on the Jean Planque Collection. Museum admission is free for travelers who pre-book the Aix-en-Provence City Pass.
Things to know before you go
Admission is free for anyone under 18, as well as students ages 18–25.
The Musée Granet has a small shop for books and gifts.
The museum is wheelchair accessible and loaner wheelchairs are available.
How to get there
The main museum is in the Mazarin area of Aix-en-Provence, about a 10-minute walk from the main train station and about a 3-minute walk from the museum's Granet XX Jean Planque Collection. The closest public parking lots are Carnot and Mignet, both off of the Boulevard du Roi René. Bus lines M1, 3, 5, 6, and 13 all stop close to the museum.
When to get there
The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday year-round, and is closed on Mondays, Christmas and New Year's Days, and May 1. It opens 2 hours earlier during the summer season (from mid-June through September). Come on a weekday and arrive early to beat the crowds.
Noteworthy works of art at the Musée Granet
The museum houses some particularly spectacular works, including a version of The Feast of Acheloüs by Peter Paul Rubens and a harrowing self-portrait by Rembrandt. There's also a large collection of Paul Cezanne pieces, including a portrait of Emile Zola. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to marvel at the intricately carved pieces in the sculpture gallery, many of which were made in Provence in the 19th century.
