Museo Casa de la Libertad

Pl. 25 de Mayo, Sucre, Bolivia

There are few historic monuments in Bolivia as important as Museo Casa de la Libertad, where Bolivia’s declaration of independence was signed in 1825. The building’s architecture is as impressive as its exhibits; portraits of Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre are displayed between bronze-studded cedar doors and below an elaborately decorated Mudejar ceiling.

The basics

The museum’s collection is spread across eight rooms. Highlights include Salón de la Independencia, a 17th-century former Jesuit chapel; a granite plinth upon which the independence charter sits proudly; and the Senate Room, where you’ll see medals and objects belonging to former Bolivian presidents. Most sightseeing tours of Sucre—Bolivia’s constitutional (but not administrative) capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—stop at the Museo Casa de la Libertad, along with the ornate main square of Plaza 25 de Mayo and the Museum of Indigenous Art.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s an admission fee to enter the museum, which includes a guided tour.

  • The information panels are mostly in Spanish, but an English or French guided tour is included in your ticket price.

  • The lower floors of Museo Casa de la Libertad are wheelchair accessible, but any upper levels may be difficult to reach due to the building’s historical nature.

How to get there

Museo Casa de la Libertad is on Sucre’s main square, Plaza 25 de Mayo. From Sucre airport, it’s 19 miles (30 kilometers) and a 50-minute drive. The city’s historic center is easy to explore on foot, as most top attractions are a short stroll from one another.

When to get there

The museum is open daily. During the week, it’s open from morning until early evening, but closes for two hours over lunch. On the weekends, it opens in the morning and closes at lunchtime. Guided tours take place every hour.

More top museums in Sucre

Thanks to its rich cultural heritage, Sucre boasts several brilliant museums. One of the best in Bolivia, the Museum of Indigenous Art (ASUR) exhibits examples of ancestral weaving and textiles and sheds light on the culture of the Indigenous Jal'qa and Candelaria (Tarabuco) cultures. The Museo Nacional de Etnografía y Folklore (known as MUSEF) illuminates the diverse cultures of native Bolivian people through colorful artifacts.
