POINT OF INTEREST

Museo Miraflores

7 Calle 21-55, Guatemala City, Guatemala

Set in an area of Guatemala City that was once the Maya city of Kaminaljuyu (and is now largely dominated by shopping centers), this archaeology museum features a massive collection of artifacts from the ancient city and beyond. A few ancient mounds sit just outside.

The basics

The Museo Miraflores has two permanent exhibition halls showcasing everything from ancient stamps to water vessels, plus an additional space where the museum hosts temporary exhibits (primarily focusing on modern art). There's also a scale model of the city of Kaminaljuyu and a replica burial pyramid. Many full-day and half-day Guatemala City tours stop at the museum, including tours that focus specifically on ancient history and archaeology.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum is a must-see for those interested in archaeology and Maya culture.

  • While most of the signage is in both Spanish and English, it’s best to go with a guide if you don’t know much about Maya history.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

The museum is located in the Miraflores neighborhood of Guatemala City, where the ancient Maya city of Kaminaljuyu once stood. Oddly enough, it’s surrounded by shopping malls, which means you’ll have ample access to parking if you drive there yourself. Since the area is not well-linked to other parts of the city by public transportation, taking a taxi or joining a tour that includes the museum are other convenient options.

When to get there

Museo Miraflores is open Tuesday–Sunday throughout the year, from morning until well into the evening, except on select public holidays. Check the museum’s website or social media accounts for up-to-date information on special events and activities.

Mixco Viejo

Just under a 2-hour drive from Guatemala City, Mixco Viejo is a well-preserved Maya city that's often overshadowed by better-known sites, such as Tikal. It makes for a good day trip from Guatemala City, and is worth seeing either before or after a visit to Museo Miraflores.
