Museum of Bath at Work

Bath, South West England

The Museum of Bath at Work reveals 2,000 years of Bath’s working history. Housed in a former industrial site, it showcases reconstructed workplaces and workshops, from furniture-making to ironmongery and Victorian engineering work. Visitors can see detailed exhibits and watch demonstrations on 19th-century soft drink manufacturing and bottling, offering a glimpse into the city’s diverse industrial past.

The basics

Visitors sometimes opt for a hop-on, hop-off bus tour as a convenient way to get around the city and see the museum independently. The site is also featured on some Bath walking tours, although these typically only pass by the exterior and provide a brief overview, rather than an inside visit.

Things to know before you go

The two main galleries at the museum are fully accessible, and there are accessible restrooms, but the ground-floor areas (such as the research room and Hudson Gallery) are not wheelchair accessible. There are hot and cold drinks available to purchase on-site as well as a small shop. The museum doesn’t have its own parking lot, so walking or using public transportation is more convenient.

How to get there

From Bath city center, you can walk to the museum in about 10–15 minutes. If you’re going by bus, the nearest stops are on Lansdown Road (on bus routes #2, #6, #7, #79, and #620) and Julian Road (#700 and #20C).

When to get there

The museum is typically open daily from mid-morning to late afternoon, but it has annual closures (which are usually December through mid–February), so it’s best to check the schedule before visiting. The quietest times at the museum are early weekday mornings.

Best museums in Bath

Bath boasts several fantastic museums. The Roman Baths are one of the city’s most famous attractions, providing a fascinating look into ancient bathing culture. Literary enthusiasts flock to the The Jane Austen Centre, while art lovers can explore the Museum of East Asian Art and the Victoria Art Gallery. Another must-see is No. 1 Royal Crescent, a museum meticulously decorated to reflect Bath’s style from the late 1700s.
