Museum of the Occupation of Latvia
Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1, Riga, Latvia, 1050
The stark exterior of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia sets it apart from many of the beautiful buildings that neighbor it in Riga Old Town. This brutal and cold facade reflects the events and stories told inside about Latvia’s experience under occupation by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany during the 20th century.
The basics
Set on Riga Town Hall Square, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is regularly pointed out on walking tours of the city, even if they rarely bring tourists inside. When visiting the museum, you can see the exhibits on your own, follow a rented audioguide, or book a guided tour for a deeper, more insightful experience. Expect to spend 1–2 hours in the museum, based on your level of interest and whether you take a guided tour.
Things to know before you go
Entrance fees are discounted for students.
The museum has a ramp entrance on the side of Town Hall Square and elevators inside the building.
Visitors with disabilities and a companion may enter for free.
Due to the heavy, adult themes of the museum, it may not be engaging for young children.
How to get there
The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is located on Riga Town Hall Square, so it's easy to reach if you’re walking around the Old Town. When coming from farther parts of Riga, take one of the many trams that stop at the Grēcinieku iela stop and you'll only need to walk a few minutes to the museum.
When to get there
Except for days around Christmas, New Year's, and Midsummer, the museum is open daily from morning to early evening. Check whether it will be holding a day of free entry during your visit.
Where to learn more about Latvia’s Soviet history
Visitors to Riga looking to learn more about Latvia’s history under USSR rule can follow the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia with a trip to the Corner House. Housed inside the former Soviet KGB headquarters of the city, the Corner House takes you through the surveillance and oppression imposed by the secret police on the people of Riga.
