Nantes Wine Museum (Musee du Vignoble Nantais)
82 Rue Pierre Abélard, Le Pallet, Pays de la Loire, 44330
Tucked away in one of the lesser-known French wine regions is Le Pallet village, and it’s here that you can find the Nantes Wine Museum. Dedicated to the history of this muscadet grape region, the museum is a oenophile’s joy with exhibits such as a huge 19th-century wine press, plus vineyards and a refreshing family-friendly vibe.
The basics
The wine museum is a short drive from downtown Nantes, making it an easy half- or full-day trip destination for visitors wanting an introduction to this gem of a wine region. Entry tickets can be bought as you enter, and the admission fee covers some free perks: an English information leaflet, an audio guide, and even a drink (usually a glass of muscadet wine or grape juice).
For groups over 10 people, French-speaking guided tours and wine tastings can be arranged directly with the museum. Tours of the museum with English-speaking guides can be arranged through the Nantes Vineyard Tourist Office (L‘Office de Tourisme du Vignoble de Nantes) in advance.
Things to know before you go
- Entry to the Nantes Wine Museum is free on the first Sunday of every month.
- Children under 12 can enter for free, and—unlike many wine museums—this is a fun place for kids with mini pedal tractors to drive around and toys freely available.
- The museum is free to enter with a Nantes Pass.
- The museum has a couple of disabled-access car parking spaces right by the museum entrance, and one space in the car park, which is accessible via a ramp. There is also a conservatory of grapes right by the parking lot.
How to get there
Nantes Wine Museum is located in the small town of Le Pallet, around 16 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Nantes. The easiest way to reach it is by car, and there are car parking spaces on-site. Alternatively, take one of the regular TER trains from Nantes station to Le Pallet. Direct journeys take around 20-35 minutes, with a 10-minute walk from the station to the museum.
When to get there
The museum is open every afternoon (2–6pm), Sunday to Friday, between the months of April and November. In the busier tourist months of July and August, the museum is open in the mornings from 10am to 1pm. There are also select openings in the winter to cater for the French school holidays in the local area; check with the museum before you visit for exact dates and times.
Around Le Pallet
Extend your wine museum visit into a longer day trip, and scout out other curiosities around Le Pallet. While the town doesn’t have knockout sights, it does have some historically interesting chapels and castle ruins linked to the theologian Pierre Abélard. Or, you could truly dedicate your day to wine, visiting the generations-old Lusseauds Vineyards (Vignobles Lusseaud) at Galissonniere Castle nearby. Besides tastings, the winery also has guest rooms if you want to stay the night.
