National Museum of Korea

137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, KOR

Not only is the National Museum of Korea one of the best museums in the country, it’s also free. Offering a sweeping introduction to Korean art, culture, and history, the museum houses more than 150,000 artifacts with around 12,000 on display. There’s always plenty to see, even if you’ve been to the museum before.

The three floors of this museum are divided into six exhibit areas. For a better understanding of the massive collection, book a guided tour. It’s also possible to combine a tour of the collection with guided visits to the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art and the Seoul Museum of History. No ticket is required to visit the main exhibition hall, but the Children’s Museum requires a free ticket, available at the museum or online.

  • The National Museum of Korea is a must-visit for history buffs and first-time visitors.

  • Book your ticket to the on-site Children’s Museum online ahead of time, as the free tickets are limited.

  • English audio guides are available for rent from the museum’s information desk.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible, and both wheelchairs and strollers are available to borrow for free in the Great Hall.

The National Museum of Korea is centrally located and well-connected to public transportation. To get there, take the Seoul Metro to Ichon Station and leave through Exit 2. The museum is also a stop on the Seoul hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus.

The museum is open daily throughout the year, with the exception of New Year’s Day and Chuseok in September. Evening hours are extended on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday, and other public holidays.

On the first floor, you’ll find the Prehistory and Ancient History, Medieval, and Early Modern History sections, each displaying artifacts from the beginnings of Korean civilization through the Joseon Dynasty. The second floor houses the Calligraphy and Paintings as well as an area designated for pieces donated by private collectors. The third floor contains a Sculptures and Crafts exhibit, as well as an Asian Arts section with cultural and artistic artifacts from various Asian countries.
