National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine

No. 139 Beian Road, Zhongshan, Taipei, Taiwan, 10491

Built in 1969, the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine is dedicated to the 390,000 soldiers who died in the Chinese Civil War. Today, the striking landmark is popular for its hourly Changing of the Guard ceremony. Located on the slopes of Mt. Chingshan on the Keelung River, the shrine was inspired by the Forbidden City’s Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing.

The Basics

As well as featuring a main shrine, a series of smaller halls, a bell tower, and a drum tower, the landmark offers scenic views of Taipei. The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine is among Taipei’s most popular attractions; as such, it features on most half- and full-day sightseeing tours. Explore the shrine on foot or as part of a Taipei sightseeing tour by bus, which typically also cover Taipei 101, National Palace Museum, and Lungshan Temple.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Don’t forget to bring your camera: the shrine’s entryway, comprised of three archways, is a popular photo shot.

  • The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine is free for visitors to explore.

  • Bring a hat, sunglasses, and water on hot days: the shrine’s central courtyard is open to the elements and doesn’t offer much shade.

How to Get There

The shrine is located in Taipei’s Zhongshan District. The closest Metro station is Dazhi Station, which is a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk away. Jiantan Station, served by the Tamsui-Xinyi Line, is a 10-minute bus ride away. The landmark can also be reached by bike or by taxi.

When to Get There

The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine is open daily from 9am-5pm. The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place hourly; the ceremony lasts for approximately 15 minutes, and offers plenty of opportunities for photos. The shrine is particularly busy on March 29 (Youth Day) and September 3 (Armed Forces Day), when the president attends annual, memorial ceremonies.

Other Significant Monuments in Taipei

Following your visit to the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine, venture to other must-see Taipei monuments. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, dedicated to former president Chiang Kai-shek, is one of the city’s most-visited tourist destinations, while Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built to honor the first president of the Republic of China. Both also feature Changing of the Guard ceremonies.
