Located just off of Noosa Heads' buzzing Hastings Street, Noosa Main Beach is a protected slice of heaven. Thanks to its northward-facing aspect, the waves here are gentle and the shallow slope of the white sand beach is perfect for lazing on. Consistently regarded as one of Australia’s best beaches, Noosa Main Beach is a favorite among locals and visitors.
The basics
Noosa and the Sunshine Coast are famous surf destinations, and for beginners looking to dip their toes in, Noosa Main Beach is an ideal place to learn the basics, due to its small and consistent waves. Several local surf schools offer lessons, which typically include equipment. Swimmers, too, can play in the water. Behind the beach, a well-maintained boardwalk is full of pedestrians and cyclists, and nearby Hastings Street is full of boutiques and cafés.
Things to know before you go
Umbrellas and other equipment are available to rent from Noosa Beach Surf Hire, located near the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club.
Don’t forget the sunscreen and hat to protect against UV rays!
Lifeguards patrol from 7am to 6pm.
Be aware of possible rip currents, and always read posted warnings.
How to get there
From the city of Brisbane, it’s a 2-hour drive north via the M1. While there is a parking lot at the beach, it tends to fill up very quickly, so it’s better to park further away and walk in. Alternatively, you can take a train from Brisbane Central Station to Nambour Station (two hours), then transfer to the 631 bus (about 1.5 hours), which will drop you off at Noosa Junction Plaza. From there, it's an approximately 22-minute walk to the beach.
When to get there
If you’re looking to swim and sunbathe, September and October offer sunny days and let you miss "stinger season," when jellyfish pop up in greater numbers. Surfers should visit during the summer months from December to April, as the cyclones from Northern Queensland create powerful swells this time of year. Try to hit the beach early on a weekday so you can claim a section of sand for yourself and enjoy the beauty of the beach without a huge crowd.
