Normandy Victory Museum

Parc d’Activités, La Fourchette, Carentan, Normandy, 50500

Through immersive storytelling, interactive exhibitions, and more than 15,000 WWII artifacts, the Normandy Victory Museum—also known as the Battle of the Hedge Museum—takes visitors on a journey through the 100 days following the D-Day landings. Built on a former American airfield, it’s one of the region’s most engaging museums, playing a key role in preserving Normandy’s WWII history.

The basics

There’s a lot to see at the Normandy Victory Museum, so plan at least an hour or two to browse the permanent exhibitions, which focus on the Battle of Normandy, the role of women during the war, and the troops that took part in the D-Day Landings. Exhibition highlights include a series of video interviews with veterans, a collection of tanks and armored vehicles on display outside the museum, and a vast collection of uniforms and personal items.

Things to know before you go

  • There is an admission fee, which includes access to an interactive smartphone app available in six languages, including English. Children under six are free.

  • Facilities at the museum include a restaurant, gift shop, and restrooms.

  • The museum is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The museum is located in Catz, about a 20-minute drive south of Utah Beach and a 30-minute drive west of Omaha Beach. The easiest way to get there is with your own vehicle, and free parking is available on-site. Alternatively, the closest train station is in Carentan, 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) away.

When to get there

Opening hours vary depending on the seasons, but the museum is open daily from 9.30am to 7pm during high season—mid-May to August. It can get busy on weekends through July and August, so choose a weekday morning visit to dodge the crowds. From November through March, the museum is typically only open on weekends and weekdays during school holiday periods, so check ahead before you visit.

A tour of Normandy’s WWII sites

Normandy is home to some of France’s most memorable WWII battle sites, and you can combine Normandy Victory Museum with the D-Day memorials at nearby Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, stopping at the Normandy American Cemetery, the battle site of Pointe du Hoc, and the Utah Beach Landing Museum. Further east, you’ll find Gold Beach, Juno Beach, and Sword Beach, where the British and Canadian troops landed, along with the Caen Memorial Museum and the D-Day Museum in Arromanches.
