POINT OF INTEREST

North Hobart

North Hobart, Hobart, Tasmania, 7000

The Hobart suburb of North Hobart is a popular spot for dining out, particularly along Elizabeth Street. Here you'll find everything from Italian restaurants to cafés to delis slinging Tasmanian produce and artisanal items. It’s a nice area for strolling and shopping, too.

The basics

While the food options are what draw many visitors to North Hobart, there's plenty more to do in the neighborhood than lunching and brunching. You can shop for vintage clothes and handcrafted gifts in local boutiques, head to Tony Haigh Walk to see street art and murals, or pop into the State Cinema on North Hobart for a screening of an Australian indie film.

Things to know before you go

  • North Hobart is a great place for food lovers, with lots of delis and cafés, particularly along Elizabeth Street.

  • Wearing layers is helpful if exploring on foot, as North Hobart can be chilly and rainfall isn't uncommon.

  • Many of the area's restaurants and other businesses are wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

North Hobart is just northeast of the Hobart Central Business District (CBD), about a 25-minute walk or 6-minute drive from Franklin Square via Argyle Street or Elizabeth Street. The neighborhood is well connected by bus, and lines 510, 522, 551, and 722 stop here.

When to get there

The best time to visit Hobart is during the summertime (December–February), though this period also brings the most crowds. Autumn is a good alternative, but expect colder temperatures; the spring tends to be particularly rainy. Winter is chilly, but it's also when the annual Dark Mofo festival takes place, known for its light installations, live music, and art.

The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona)

Just north of Hobart, the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) is Tasmania's most celebrated museum. Here you can see permanent and temporary exhibitions that embrace the whimsical, innovative, or even bizarre, most of which comes from the private collection of pro gambler David Walsh. There's even a winery featuring pours from Walsh's Moorilla Estate nearby.
