Oak Park
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Right in the center of Bishkek, this tranquil, leafy park provides a quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of the Kyrgyz capital. Known for its towering oak trees, the park also has jogging paths, public fountains, and a 1980s-era sculpture exhibition with 90 statues related to Kyrgyz and Soviet history, including one of Marx and Engels.
The basics
Oak Park is set near several other prominent Bishkek attractions, such as Ala-Too Square and the Kyrgyz State Historical Museum, so chances are visitors will stumble across the public space during their stay in the Kyrgyz capital. Many hotels, including the Park Hyatt and Park Hotel, are also nearby. Residents come here for a morning or evening stroll, while tourists may wish to bring a book, people-watch, or photograph the sculptures on display.
Things to know before you go
- Traveling with kids? Not only is this a great space for children to run around and burn off energy, but you’ll also find mini carnival-style games here with fun prizes, such as toy yurts.
- Be sure to have some small Kyrgyzstani bills on hand, as vendors typically only take cash.
- If you plan on taking photos, avoid the harsh midday light and aim for either the post-dawn or pre-dusk golden hour when the sun gives everything a buttery glow.
- Oak Park features flat, paved lanes, making it accessible to visitors with wheelchairs or with mobility restrictions, but it’s a good idea to confirm in advance before planning a visit here.
- While you’ll typically only find drinks and snacks for sale in Oak Park, there are many eateries around offering both Kyrgyz and international cuisine. Consider grabbing a meal to go and planning a picnic.
How to get there
Oak Park is within walking distance of many central Bishkek attractions—about a 10-minute stroll from Ala-Too Square. If you’re taking a car, Yandex is typically the rideshare app of choice in Kyrgyzstan, so be sure to have it downloaded.
When to get there
Oak Park is busiest on sunny weekend afternoons, so if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, with vendors and carnival games in full swing, then come then. Otherwise, for a more tranquil experience, aim for a quieter weekday morning or early evening. Late spring to early fall is the ideal time for planning any outdoor activities, as Bishkek’s winters are famously frigid.
Soviet monumental architecture at Ala-Too Square
Oak Park and Ala-Too Square are both popular gathering points for tourists and locals alike, but they’re different as night and day. While Oak Park is peaceful and green—a rare oasis in a city better known for concrete—Ala-Too Square (the name means “Great Mountain”) was built as a testament to Soviet pomp. Now, it’s a symbol of Kyrgyz national pride. The original statue of Lenin was removed after independence, and the square features a horseback Manas—the Kyrgyz national hero.
