POINT OF INTEREST

Ohori Park

Ohorikoen, Fukuoka, Japan, 810-0051

This peaceful park in Fukuoka is centered on a large lake with islands through the middle. Joggers can be seen running around the paths, while other visitors sit to watch the birds gliding on the water. The Ukimi Pavilion adds color to the lake’s shores with its distinctive red railing, while the Ohori Park Japanese Garden is secluded on the park’s southern edge.

The basics

There are lots of ways to spend anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours at Ohori Park—you may want to visit the park’s three islands, go paddle boating, or walk or cycle around the entire lake. The park is a staple on most walking and cycling tours around Fukuoka.

Note, though, that tours may not make time for the Ohori Park Japanese Garden and its teahouse, so you may need to come back for that. Afterwards you can stop at the neighboring Fukuoka Art Museum or continue through to Maizuru Park to see the castle ruins and cherry blossoms there.

Things to know before you go

  • The Ohori Park Japanese Garden has an entrance fee, but the rest of the park does not.

  • Paddle boats and small rowing boats are available for rent at the lake’s north end.

  • Several cafés and a bakery sit around the edge of the lake.

  • Public restrooms can be found on the lake’s eastern shore near the Fukuoka Art Museum.

How to get there

Ohori Park is located in the Chuo Ward of Fukuoka near the center of the city. Take the Airport Line on the Fukuoka Subway to the Ohori Park station on the park’s north side. When the subway isn’t a convenient option, you’ll find a range of bus routes that run past the northern and southern ends of the park.

When to get there

While Ohori Park is always open, some of its attractions have separate operating hours. This includes the Ohori Park Japanese Garden, which is open daily during regular business hours. Come in the spring or summer to see the park’s tulips or sunflowers. Avoid visiting in late October or early November, when the park is full of runners preparing for the Fukuoka Marathon.

More parks in Fukuoka

Ohori Park is just one of several parks that are worth visiting in Fukuoka. Directly next to it, Maizuru Park was named for the castle ruins that it formed around (while Ohori Park actually formed from the castle’s moat). See old castle gates and fortifications there, plus plenty of flowers during cherry blossom season. Nishi Park near the harbor is another good park to visit in the spring to see cherry blossoms.
