POINT OF INTEREST

Padang

Singapore, 179861

One of Singapore's oldest open green spaces, the Padang has long been used for public recreation and holiday celebrations and as a sport, parade, and ceremonial ground. Surrounded by the colonial architecture of the historic Civic District, the Padang is now protected as a national monument.

The basics

The Padang, which means “field” or “open ground” in Malay, is a fitting name for this iconic public space. Today, the space is still used for cricket, rugby, football, tennis matches, and other sporting events, with the Singapore Cricket Club at one end and the Singapore Recreation Club at the other. Community and other social and recreational events are also held here. Some Singapore sightseeing tours, especially those focused on history, include a stop here.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s free to access the Padang.

  • Facilities include a soccer field, cricket pitch, two lawn tennis courts, and a multi-purpose court.

  • Portions of the Padang can be booked for sporting, community, and recreation events.

  • The Padang offers open views of downtown Singapore and Marina Bay.

How to get there

The Padang is located in the Civic District of Singapore. It’s bordered by St. Andrew Road, Connaught Drive, and Stamford Road. The nearest MRT station is City Hall Station, less than 5 minutes away. There’s a footpath for public access.

When to get there

The Padang can be visited any time, though special events can close portions of the Padang to public access. Popular major events held at the Padang include Rugby Sevens, the Singapore Marathon, the Singapore Grand Prix, and the National Gallery’s Light to Night Festival. The National Day Parade is held here every five years.

Nearby attractions

The Padang offers easy access to numerous attractions, including the former Supreme Court and City Hall (now the National Gallery), Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, the Old Parliament House and Annex Building (now the Arts House), St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the Singapore Cricket Club, and the Singapore Recreation Club.
