POINT OF INTEREST

Paleokastritsa Beach

Palaiokastritsa, Greece

The star attraction of the Paleokastritsa resort in northwest Corfu is Paleokastritsa Beach, one of the island’s most beautiful stretches of sand. Lapped by crystal waters and framed by a headland topped by the 13th-century Paleokastritsa Monastery, this crescent of sand is a hotspot for families, swimmers, and snorkelers.

The basics

Paleokastritsa Beach has everything you need for a relaxing day on the sands; from tavernas and bars overlooking the water to sun loungers and parasols for hire. When you want to hit the waves, watersports companies offer everything from paddleboard, kayak, and Jet Ski rentals to scuba diving and scenic boat tours.

Many full-day Corfu sightseeing tours from Corfu Town and other towns visit the beach, allowing time to swim, ride a boat to sea caves, or visit Paleokastritsa Monastery before continuing to other island highlights such as Glyfada Beach and Mouse Island. Other day trips feature free time at Paleokastritsa and Glyfada Beach, while some combine Paleokastritsa’s sands with the contrasting Achilleion Palace.

Things to know before you go

  • Paleokastritsa Beach’s soft sands and calm waters are ideal for all ages.

  • Sunbed and parasol rentals get snapped up in high season: arrive early to secure them.

  • Restrooms are in the tavernas beside the beach.

  • The main car park behind the beach fills quickly come summer, so aim to beat the mid-morning rush.

How to get there

Paleokastritsa Beach is 14 miles (23 kilometers) northwest of Corfu Town; it's a 30-minute car journey via Highway 24. Other options include cabs, Uber, and Corfu’s Green Line or KTEL public buses, which connect most of the island’s towns. To get here by bus from Corfu Town, catch the A9 service from the Green bus terminal on Leof. Eptanisou—it runs to Paleokastritsa several times daily.

When to get there

For hot days and warm seas, the best time to hit Paleokastritsa Beach is from June to September: Average August air and sea temps hover around 82.4°F (28°C) and 78.8°F (26°C) respectively. However, be prepared for the sands to be very busy, especially in July and August. For a quieter visit, come early morning or late afternoon; alternatively, visit Paleokastritsa during spring or fall, when the crowds have dispersed.

Other beaches near Paleokastritsa Beach

If Paleokastritsa Beach is overly busy, scout out some quieter local spots. Stroll northward and you'll find the sand-and-pebble St. Petros Beach, which is usually quieter. To the south is pebbly Agia Triada beach, which is well organized with sunbeds, parasols, and watersports. Otherwise, drive south to Rovinia Beach for some fantastic snorkeling, or catch a boat from Paleokastritsa to Paradise Beach, a peaceful, cliff-backed beach only accessible by sea.
