POINT OF INTEREST

Parc du Mugel

Calanque du Mugel, La Ciotat, France, 13600

Naturally sheltered from the wind and sea spray by the huge Bec de l’Aigle cliff, Parc du Mugel benefits from a microclimate that supports a dense vegetation of tropical plants, cacti, bamboo, and herbs. Visitors can admire the greenery on a stroll around the 30-acre (12-hectare) park, then climb to the Belvedere lookout point for sweeping views over the Calanques du Mugel below.

The basics

Sitting south of La Ciotat town, Parc du Mugel offers a pleasant, leafy hangout year-round. While many La Ciotat travelers visit the nearby Calanques du Mugel on kayak tours or cruises, the park itself doesn’t often feature on guided excursions. However, given its proximity to the town and coastline, the park is ideal for a stroll or picnic before heading to the beaches nearby.

Things to know before you go

  • The park is free to visit and is a good option for a spontaneous trip.

  • Aim to spend around two hours at the park, or make a day of it by visiting the beaches, too.

  • Bring your bathing suit and a towel on a hot day for a cool-down dip in nearby Mugel Bay.

  • The park is considered accessible for disabled visitors, although there is a steep path to the lookout point.

  • If you have young kids, bring a carrier instead of a stroller to visit the lookout point.

How to get there

You can reach Parc du Mugel by foot easily from La Ciotat center, or via public transit on the Ciotabus network (line 30), disembarking at the Mugel stop. If you’re a driver, you can leave your vehicle in the Mugel paid car park, which is around 300 meters (985 feet) from the park entrance on Avenue des Calanques.

When to get there

The park is in full bloom during the spring and summer months, but it can get busy with visitors in the peak season of July and August. Late spring is ideal to enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere. The park gates are open from early morning until early evening each day.

La Calanque du Mugel

Mugel Bay, or La Calanque du Mugel, is home to the two pebble beaches of Le Petit e Grand Mugel, both of which are next to the park. You can reach these following a path from the park, which continues over to the Anse du Sec. Picnic benches, a playground, public showers, and a restaurant are all nearby.
