POINT OF INTEREST

Parco del Cardeto

Via Montenero, 4, Ancona, Italy, 60123

Stretching over more than 85 acres (35 hectares) of coastal cliff top in the heart of Ancona, Parco del Cardeto is the city’s premier public park. Explore the winding walking paths lined by thick Mediterranean vegetation on foot or by bike, pausing to take in the sweeping sea views from this hilltop park. Other things to do include visiting the Jewish and English cemeteries, historic lighthouse, Bastion of San Paolo, and remains of the Cardeto and Cappuccini Forts.

The basics

Parco del Cardeto is ideal for a scenic break after a city sightseeing tour on foot or by e-bike. Join a guide to take in cultural highlights like the Ancona Cathedral, Roman amphitheater and Arch of Trajan, Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, and the Mole Vanvitelliana, then head to the park to relax and enjoy views far from the city bustle. You can also visit the park after a scenic boat tour of foodie experience; Ancona offers endless options for wine tours, cooking classes, and meals with a local host in their home.

Things to know before you go

  • The park is an ideal stop for families—there are walking paths, picnic areas, and open spaces for kids to play.

  • The cemeteries and old lighthouse can be admired from the outside, while the restored Castelfidardo armory is open for special events and exhibitions. The Bastion of San Paolo is open to the public on specific dates during the year by Italy’s National Trust.

  • There are several scenic overlooks in the park, so charge your camera battery before visiting.

  • The park is free to enter.

  • Bring water if you are visiting in summer as there are no fountains or snack bars.

  • Bumpy paths with steps make exploring the park with a wheelchair or stroller a challenge.

How to get there

Parco del Cardeto covers the Cappuccini and Cardeto hills along Ancona’s northeastern coast. The park can be accessed via the entrance on Via Birarelli and is easy to reach from many of the sights in the old town on foot. Otherwise, local buses stop just steps from the entrance.

When to get there

The park typically is open from early in the morning—around 7:30am—and closes at 8:30pm in summer and 7:30pm in winter. There is little shelter or shade in the park, so avoid the hottest hours of the day and visit when the weather is fine to enjoy the best views.

Things to do with kids in Ancona

Most families spend their time in Ancona on the beach, but the old town has a number of attractions that are ideal for kids. In addition to the open spaces of Parco del Cardeto, the city’s Citadella Park has a fun playground area, while Laghetti del Passetto Park along the waterfront delights visitors with its colorful fishermen caves just steps from the sea. For a cultural diversion, explore the Museo Tattile Statale Omero (Omero State Tactile Museum), where visitors are encouraged to get hands-on with the artworks.
