POINT OF INTEREST

Park Güell

Barcelona, ESP

Antoni Gaudí spent 15 years designing and building the whimsical fountains, mosaic benches, pedestrian walkways, and gingerbread house-like buildings within Park Güell, one of the seven Works of Antoni Gaudí locations that together make up a UNESCO World Heritage site. Along with the Sagrada Familia, the hilltop public park sits at the top of Barcelona’s must-see list, and for good reason. The art nouveau wonderland adorns many a postcard of the city.

While much of the park remains free to enter and explore, the Monumental Zone, housing many of the most notable landmarks—the benches, gatehouses, dragon stairway, and columned Hypostyle Room—requires a ticket to enter. Stop at the park on a city sightseeing tour, or combine a visit with a tour of Gaudí’s other notable works or even a half-day trip to Montserrat.

  • This site is a must-visit for art and architecture buffs.

  • You can bypass the crowds with an early-access ticket.

  • Download the free app, Park Güell, Official Guide to the Monumental Zone, before your visit for interactive maps and audio snippets about the park.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, particularly during summer.

  • Free WiFi is available throughout the Monumental Zone.

  • Due to flights of stairs and uneven paths, Park Güell is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Park Güell is in the Gràcia neighborhood, about a 15-minute walk from the Vallcarca and Lesseps metro stations on Line 3. The hop-on, hop-off blue-line bus also stops at the park, as do public buses H6, 32, 24, and 92.

Tickets to the park’s Monumental Zone, one of Barcelona’s top attractions, often sell out during the high season (July and August), so plan ahead, and know that the weather can be hot and humid in the summer. Park hours are shorter in the winter months, while both spring and autumn strike a balance with fewer people, cooler weather, and longer opening hours. The hilltop area in the free portion of the park is a popular spot at sunset.

Some of Park Güell’s most notable features—its colorful tile-shard mosaics—aren’t the work of Gaudí His assistant, artist Josep Maria Jujol, was responsible for the park’s undulating tiled benches, as well as the tiled, domed ceiling of the Hypostyle Room.

Yes, a Park Güell guided tour is worth it. This is a large site, spanning 30 acres (12 hectares), with a complex history, and without a guide it’s easy to miss key details, particularly in Gaudí’s House. All that said, many travelers enjoy Park Güell independently.

Depending on your tastes and interests, you should allow one to three hours for visiting Park Güell. Most travelers spend one hour in the ticketed area and another 30 minutes to explore Gaudí’s House; it takes about 1.5 hours to explore the wooded area, which is free to enter.

Yes. Buying tickets in advance for Park Güell isn’t required, but it’s usually necessary as this is one of Barcelona’s most popular attractions. You may be able just to show up when visiting midweek at quieter times of year, but prebooking is essential at weekends and in the summer peak.

The best time to visit Park Guell is in the “golden hour,” the one to two hours after sunrise or before sunset when the light is best for photography. These periods are sometimes reserved for residents: Aim to visit either at the start or the finish of the ticketed day.

The park spans 30 acres (12 hectares) of hillside, so comfortable shoes are a must. Other than that, wear what you would choose elsewhere in the city. Casual and revealing outfits are fine, but swimwear is not: Guys should wear shirts and women should leave the bikini for the beach.

Park Güell is at its busiest in the middle of the day, as the morning’s visitors start to add up and the coach tours come through. For a quieter experience, plan your visit for as soon as the site opens or shortly before closing. Opening hours vary by season.
