Parliament House

Salamanca Place, Hobart, Tasmania, 7000

A short walk from the Hobart waterfront, the elegant Parliament House houses Tasmania’s Parliament. It was built in the Georgian style using locally quarried sandstone and was initially designed as a customs house. It’s one of many Hobart buildings designed by John Lee Archer and is worth visiting for its architecture alone.

The basics

While you can see the building from the outside or spend a bit of time in the public galleries (when Parliament is sitting), it’s worth hopping on one of the tours run by House of Assembly parliamentary assistants. These tours provide insight into the building and its role in modern-day political life. Tours generally include visits to both chambers and the Parliamentary Museum. They run around an hour in length.

Things to know before you go

  • Parliament House tours are a must-do for those interested in politics, but younger children might find the experience less exciting.

  • Tours of the Parliament House are free to the public and last around an hour.

  • Parliament House is wheelchair-accessible, but only at some entrances.

How to get there

Parliament House is located on Salamanca Place in the heart of Hobart, right by the Waterfront. It's within walking distance of most central hotels, and you can easily reach it using taxis or ride-share services. Dozens of buses stop in the area, too, and the nearest bus stops are on Davey Street, a block away.

When to get there

While you can see Parliament House from the outside whenever you want, tours are only available on non-sitting weekdays. Tours typically operate twice daily, once in the morning and a second in the afternoon. You can also visit the public galleries when the House of Assembly or the Legislative Council is sitting. For details and dates, check the combined sitting calendar, which is available on the Parliament of Tasmania website.

St. George's Anglican Church

Another of architect John Lee Archer's many Hobart creations, St. George's Anglican Church has been a local landmark since it was erected in 1838. It's worth visiting this hilltop church to check out the architecture and views, or you can attend one of the regular services held at the church to this day.
