Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel
Zona Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, 37700
This pink-tinted confection of towers, domes, and Gothic windows is among San Miguel de Allende’s most beloved landmarks and sits at the heart of the city’s UNESCO-listed historic center. It gives off a rosy glow on sunny afternoons, then lights up dramatically after dark. Whether you come for the architecture or drop by a well-attended Sunday mass, this is a don’t-miss site.
The basics
With its central location in the oldest part of town, this church is hard to miss. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel is part of many guided city tours, from sunset outings on horseback to walking tours. You can visit independently, but coming with a guide has advantages. From art to history and religions, there’s a lot to see inside the church—it can help to explore with someone who can point out its fascinating details and backstories.
Things to know before you go
Bring some pesos; the church is free, but you may want small change for the donation boxes and candles.
History buffs shouldn't miss the crypt below the church, which holds the remains of revered fighters in the struggle for Mexican independence.
The nearby park makes a great place to relax after exploring the center.
How to get there
The Parroquia de San Miguel is located in the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, just south of Jardin Allende, the biggest plaza in the city. It’s walkable from many attractions and hotels. A few parking lots are nearby—you'll find a cluster of lots on the north-south Quebrada between Umarán and Pila Seca.
When to get there
You can usually visit the church any day of the week; it’s generally open from 7am, with a 2-hour daily closure from 2pm to 4pm. Visitors are welcome at daily masses, regardless of religion. There are three daily services from Monday to Saturday and nine services on Sunday. Check the church website to confirm the precise timing.
Best rooftop bars in San Miguel de Allende
It’s not often you get to take in religious architecture while sipping a drink, but some of the best Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel views are from nearby rooftop bars. The Rooftop at Selina is a great option, especially at sunset; with its frequent DJs and international menu, another favorite is Quince. While the views from Luna Rooftop are more distant, they present a dramatic panoramic cityscape with the church as a centerpiece.
