Munich’s Paulaner Brewery (Paulaner Brauerei) dates back to 1634, when monks first started brewing beer on the Nockherberg hill by the River Isar. While commercial production has moved outside of the city, the small brewery still boasts a restaurant and beer garden, and hosts an annual beer festival.
The Basics
Each spring during Nockherberg’s Strong Beer Festival (Starkbierfest), Paulaner’s 17.6-proof (7.9 percent alcohol) Salvator brew comes into its own. However, Paulaner Nockherberg is built for year-round enjoyment; learn about the manufacturing process of traditional Bavarian beer at the in-house brewery; feast on classic and contemporary Bavarian cuisine at the restaurant; or enjoy a brew in the chesnut-tree-shaded beer garden, which was voted one of Munich’s most beautiful.
Things to Know Before You Go
The legal age for drinking beer and wine in public in Germany is 16, though you need to be over 18 to drink spirits.
Combining beer and family time is normal in Bavarian culture, therefore Paulaner am Nockherberg is stroller-friendly with a children’s playground.
Paulaner Nockherberg is wheelchair-friendly, with barrier-free bathrooms, wheelchair-accessible parking, and some wheelchair-compatible tables. Be aware that the street to the venue is steep.
How to Get There
Paulaner am Nockherberg sits south of the river in central Munich and is a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) walk from the Marienplatz square. Catch the subway to Kolumbusplatz (U1, U2, or U7) and walk for 10 minutes, or take the 52 bus to Mariahilfplatz from the stop at Marienplatz.
When to Get There
The springtime Strong Beer Festival, which coincides with the Catholic Lent period before Easter, is a great time to see Paulaner Nockherberg in action. The place also celebrates whenever Bayern Munich win a soccer trophy as Paulaner have sponsored them for years. Paulaner Nockherberg is open from late morning until midnight all year round.
