Pavilion of Prince Teng (Tengwang Pavilion)

58 Fanggu St, Nanchang, China, 330009

The nine-story Pavilion of Prince Teng was originally built in the Tang dynasty, so it’s seen its fair share of history. Set in Nanchang, the structure is famous for its height, large size, and architectural style, which is actually related to the Song Dynasty. Inside there are bronzes, musical instruments, and other extravagant gifts given to Prince Teng.

The basics

Tours often visit the Pavilion of Prince Teng as part of a larger Nanchang city tour, many of which head to Nanchang Bayi Square and Shengjin Tower, too. It’s good to go with a guide, who can explain much more about the 7th-century landmark than you would learn from a guidebook, particularly about the architectural accomplishment and historical significance of the pavilion.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes if you think you’ll be walking up the many stairs inside the pavilion.

  • Make sure your cameras are charged for some great shots, but do check with employees, as some areas may not allow photographs.

  • Many parts of the pavilion are wheelchair accessible, but not the areas reached by stairs.

How to get there

You have a few options for getting to the Pavilion of Prince Teng. Hop on Metro Line 1, which takes you straight there, or ride one of the several buses that stop at Tengwang Ge. You can always grab a taxi, but be sure to write the name of the pavilion in Chinese to show your driver, and make sure to bring a hotel card to give your driver on the return trip.

When to get there

The pavilion is open year-round, and visiting hours are a bit longer from April to December. Aim for weekday mornings to avoid the biggest crowds, or stick around for the evening, when there is music and dancing—plus the city lights turn on, so you’ll take in some great views if you climb the nine stories in the pavilion.

Take a night river cruise

China excels at lighting things up at night, and Nanchang is no exception. Consider going on an after-dark river cruise, where you can see the bridges, buildings, and impressive Tengwang Pavilion illuminated. Stop for some food at the food street next to Shangjin Tower to round out your evening.
