POINT OF INTEREST

Pedra do Telegrafo

Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 23020

One of Rio de Janeiro’s top viewpoints, the Pedra do Telégrafo offers beautiful vistas overlooking the coast and prime selfie backdrops, thanks to an optical effect that makes visitors look like they’re hanging off the edge of a cliff. Located in western Rio’s Pedra Branca State Park (Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca), it’s an excellent nature escape.

The basics

Located within Brazil’s protected Atlantic Forest, the Pedra do Telégrafo offers some of the most impressive views overlooking the region’s coast. It’s also easier to access than some other viewpoints, with a moderate trail that typically takes no more than an hour to climb. Set out early via public transit or taxi to the trailhead, and prepare for a gentle climb. Although it’s a popular place for hikers, the viewpoint is today best known for its selfie potential, and it’s worth waiting in line to get the perfect shot.

Alternatively, guided tours offer the easiest way to get there. Pick an itinerary that includes round-trip transit from the Zona Sul (South Zone) in Rio de Janeiro for maximum convenience and to make navigating the trails up to the viewpoint more accessible.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear sneakers rather than flip-flops for the climb up to the viewpoint.

  • Sun and insect protection are strongly recommended, especially if you plan to visit during the middle of the day.

  • Note that lines to take selfies at the Pedra do Telégrafo can be hours long during popular visiting times.

  • Toilets are not available at the site or along the trail.

  • Come prepared with water and snacks for the climb; some vendors work along the trails.

How to get there

The Pedra do Telégrafo is located at the Morro de Guaratiba mountain, part of the Pedra Branca State Park (Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca) just west of Rio de Janeiro proper. To get there, travel by the 867 bus (or via rideshare service or taxi) towards the Barra de Guaratiba trailhead. Alternatively, book a tour with round-trip transit to make getting there easier.

When to get there

Be sure to visit the Pedra do Telégrafo on a clear day when coastal fog won’t obstruct the views (or your selfies). The landmark tends to be especially crowded during weekends and public holidays. Aim to leave early for cooler hiking conditions and shorter selfie lines.

Pedra da Gávea

Have you finished your Pedra do Telégrafo hike, and are you ready for a more challenging—and even more rewarding—trail? In that case, it’s worth exploring the lofty Pedra da Gávea mountain, which offers some of the region’s most stellar views. Book a small-group hike; having a guide’s assistance makes getting there and navigating any technical sections of the climb more accessible.
