Penang State Museum and Art Gallery
Farquhar Street, George Town, Penang, 10200
Touted as one of the country’s best state museums, the Penang State Museum and Art Gallery covers Penang’s history, including the settlement of the islands and the Penang Riots. The museum’s collection also showcases the cultural heritage that developed along the way, from the Peranakan people to British colonial influence to today.
The basics
Dive into Penang’s cultural melting pot as you explore the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions. Learn about key events in the island’s history; admire old, faded photos of Penang through the years; and follow the events of the 1867 riots that almost caused a civil war.
Highlights at the museum and gallery include a collection of Baba Nyonya porcelain, old Malay weaponry, a series of oil paintings by Captain Robert Smith, and ancient jewelry. Art lovers also can check out the temporary exhibitions that feature works by local artists.
