Peter Lehmann Wines
Para Road, Tanunda, South Australia, 5352
Originally named Masterson Wines, after the gambler Sky Masterson from the musical “Guys and Dolls,” this mid-size South Australian vineyard was established in the late 1970s, eventually taking on the moniker of its winemaker, who has been credited with helping shape the Barossa winemaking industry. Since then, Peter Lehmann Wines' luscious reds and whites have been celebrated locally and internationally, and its family farm feel has welcomed visitors for generations.
The basics
After touring the grounds and learning about the practice of winemaking, travelers can saddle up to the on-site restaurant for a taste of Lehmann’s bold shiraz. Growers have been gathering at the weighbridge (the place at the winery where you’ll find scales for weighing grapes) after a long day’s work since the vineyard first opened. Today, visitors can join them in the same age-old tradition and tuck into a generous platter filled with local produce, cheese, homemade chutney, and meats. Visitors can also book different introductory classes and wine-tasting experiences.

Then, turn right onto Gomersal Road toward the winery. It’s located near other famous wineries, including Penfolds. Guided tours from Adelaide typically provide roundtrip transportation.
When to get there
Peter Lehmann Wines is open Thursday through Monday, 10:30am–4:30pm, and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and during Easter weekend, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. The best time to visit Barossa Valley is in the fall (March–May) when the weather is usually mild and sunny.
Blend your own wine at Penfolds
Located just north of Peter Lehmann, the scenic Penfolds Magill Estate, home to its Barossa Valley cellar door, is another popular spot you’ll want to visit when touring the area. While you’re there, you can use the winemaker’s laboratory to blend your own wine from grenache, shiraz, and mourvedre, which you’ll then be able to take home.
