Phra Sumen Fort

Phra Athit Road, Chana Songkhram, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok, Thailand, 10200

Built in 1793 on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Phra Sumen Fort is one of many forts built around Bangkok during the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods. The hexagonal structure is now closed to the public, but it can be admired from the grassy Santichaiprakarn Park surrounding it.

The basics

To get a good glimpse of the fort, you’ll want to either head over to Santichaiprakarn Park for a stroll or hop aboard one of the many luxury dinner cruises that pass by the historic site every evening as they make their way down the river. Some guided tours also stop here, and while not even guides can get you inside, they can at least provide some information about the fort and its historical significance.

Things to know before you go

  • Visitors are not allowed inside the fort and can only view it from outside.

  • Admission to Santichaiprakarn Park in front of Phra Sumen Fort is free.

  • The park is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility, and most people who come to relax or picnic sit right on the grass.

How to get there

Phra Sumen Fort is situated on the eastern banks of the Chao Phraya River, right next to the Phra Arthit ferry stop and a short walk from Bangkok's backpacker enclave of Khaosan Road. There’s a bus stop in front of the fort, but the closest metro stop is a good half-hour walk away, so you may find taking a tuk-tuk or taxi the most convenient way to get here.

When to get there

Phra Sumen Fort and Santichaiprakarn Park are delightful in the early morning and around sunset when the weather is at its nicest. The park is also a popular spot for sunrise and sunset exercise classes. If you’re sensitive to the sun and heat, avoid visiting between 11am and 3pm, when the sun can be overwhelmingly powerful.

Thailand's Royal Barge Procession

If you happen to be at Phra Sumen Fort for one of the rare Royal Barge Processions, you're in for a treat. These ceremonies, which have been taking place for around seven centuries, feature processions of up to 105 beautifully crafted barges, most of which belong to the royal family or branches of the Thai armed services. They are only held in honor of special events, such as royal jubilees and coronations.
