Piazza Baldassare Galuppi
Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, Burano, Italy, 30142
Have your camera ready to capture the rainbow of colorful townhouses lining lively Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, Burano’s main square. Home to landmarks like the Chiesa di San Martino, Lace Museum, and statue of Baldassare Galuppi—the Venetian composer who was born on Burano—this piazza is the heart of the island and one of its most photographed spots.
The basics
Set at the far end of Via Baldassare Galuppi—Burano’s main pedestrian thoroughfare—the eponymous square is a highlight of Venetian islands tours that generally also stop at the glass-making island of Murano. Join a Burano tour by vaporetto (water bus) or private water taxi to take in the island’s famous technicolor homes, 16th-century church with its leaning bell tower, Lace Museum documenting the island’s history of lacemaking, and lace shops and seafood restaurants bustling with visitors.
Things to know before you go
The square is traffic-free, so ideal for families with young kids who want to explore safely.
A wide range of eateries sit around the square, mostly serving seafood, but there is also a smattering of pizzerias and sandwich shops.
Burano is a photographer’s dream, so charge your camera battery before visiting.
The square is flat and paved, so it’s easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller.
How to get there
Burano sits in the Venetian Lagoon northeast of central Venice, and must be reached by boat. Take vaporetto number 12 from the Fondamente Nove stop, which takes about 50 minutes, or have a private water taxi pick you up from your hotel or Piazza San Marco to reach the island in about half that time.
When to get there
Burano buzzes with visitors by day, but is one of Venice’s quietest islands by night. Soak in its lively atmosphere in the morning or afternoon, taking time to wander the colorful pedestrian streets and dine in a seafood restaurant, or plan an overnight to experience its magically sleepy vibe after sunset.
Burano’s most colorful photo ops
Burano has risen to Insta fame over the past few years thanks to its cheerfully painted townhouses, reflected artfully in the island’s three canals. Some of the most photographed houses and locations include “Bepi’s House”—the only dwelling on the island that’s painted in multicolored geometric designs rather than one bright color—plus the Tre Ponti bridge where Burano’s two main canals intersect.
